Milking Devon Cow and Calf
Open edition print, 10”x 10”, giclee print on hannemuhle paper, with 1 in. border, ready to frame in standard 12”x12” frame, $50.
The breed that literally inspired the founding of The Livestock Conservancy — when historians couldn't find them for the American Bicentennial and realized they'd nearly vanished — Milking Devons arrived on American soil in 1623 aboard the ship Charity, making them the first British cattle to set hoof in the New World. Deep ruby-red, fine-boned, and built to do it all — milk rich enough for Devonshire cream, beef that grass-finishes beautifully, and oxen reputed to trot six miles an hour — they are a triple-purpose animal in a world that stopped valuing triple-purpose animals. Cows are outstanding mothers who calve well into their late teens, a spring calf at their side in that unmistakable red coat, as close to the original colonial farm as anything still walking the earth.
